You can automatically forward e-mail from a Microsoft 365 mailbox to another e-mail address, such as a Gmail, Hotmail, or Telenet address.
Although automatic forwarding is technically possible, FLEXAMIT advises against automatically forwarding business e-mail to an external or personal mailbox.
Why do we advise against this?
When you automatically forward messages to an external e-mail address:
- the e-mail leaves the Microsoft 365 environment managed by your organisation;
- security, compliance, and retention policies of your organisation may no longer fully apply;
- FLEXAMIT has no control over the security of the external mailbox;
- certain features of your Microsoft 365 mailbox may be lost or behave differently.
Therefore, preferably use your Microsoft 365 mailbox directly in Outlook, Outlook on the web, or a supported mobile mail client.
1. Sign in to Outlook
Open a web browser and go to:
https://outlook.office.comSign in with the Microsoft 365 account from which you want to forward e-mail.
2. Open the Outlook settings
- Click Settings at the top right
- Open the settings for Email.
3. Set up automatic forwarding
- Within the email settings, open the Forwarding option.
- Enable automatic forwarding.
- Enter the e-mail address to which messages should be forwarded.
- If desired, choose to keep a copy of forwarded messages in the original Microsoft 365 mailbox.
- Save the settings.
Forwarding not available?
If you do not see the Forwarding option or cannot enable it, automatic forwarding may have been disabled by your organisation’s security policy.
In that case, contact FLEXAMIT. We will check whether forwarding is allowed for your account and whether it is advisable from a security perspective.
