Cannot sign in to your computer? First check your password, keyboard layout, network connection, and whether you are trying to sign in with the correct user. These checks are useful for both Windows and Mac computers.
1. Check your password
First, verify that you are entering your password correctly.
Pay particular attention to:
- Caps Lock — uppercase and lowercase letters must be correct;
- Num Lock — especially important when entering numbers via a numeric keypad;
- special characters in your password;
- whether you have recently changed your password.
Passwords are case-sensitive. An unintentionally enabled Caps Lock can be enough to cause sign-in failure.
2. Check your keyboard layout
Sometimes your computer is set to a different keyboard layout than you expect.
This can cause certain letters, numbers, and special characters to be in different places than on your physical keyboard.
Therefore, check on the sign-in screen which language or keyboard layout is active.
For example:
Especially if your password contains characters such as @, !, -, _, / or other special characters, an incorrect keyboard layout can cause you to unknowingly enter a different password.
Not every device or sign-in screen offers this option.
3. Check the network connection
For business computers, an active network or internet connection may be required to correctly verify your account.
Therefore, check whether your device is connected via:
- Wi-Fi;
- a network cable;
- another available internet connection.
If there is no connection, first try reconnecting to a known network.
Depending on how your computer and account are managed, a network connection may be needed to properly process the new password.
4. Check if you are trying to sign in with the correct user
On computers used by multiple people, a different user may be selected.
Therefore, check whether your own name or account is visible.
Depending on Windows or macOS, you may be able to:
- select a different user;
- enter your business username;
- select your own local account.
5. Are you using a PIN, Touch ID, or other sign-in method?
Both Windows and Mac can use alternative sign-in methods.
For example:
- Windows Hello PIN;
- fingerprint;
- facial recognition;
- Touch ID on Mac;
- a local device password.
If one method does not work, check whether you can switch to your normal password.
A Windows Hello PIN or biometric sign-in is not the same as your Microsoft 365 password or other business account password.
6. Restart your computer
If your computer has been on for a long time or is waking from sleep mode, a simple restart can help.
If possible, choose a full restart and then try signing in again.
Specific to Windows
On a Windows computer, you can additionally check:
- whether you can switch between PIN, password, or other available methods via Sign-in options;
- whether your own user is selected;
- whether the computer is connected to the internet if you have recently changed your password.
Specific to Mac
On a Mac, sign-in may depend on how the device is set up.
Check among other things:
- whether you select the correct local or business account;
- whether your keyboard layout is correct;
- whether the device is connected to the network if your organisation uses network-based authentication;
- whether your normal password works when Touch ID is not available.
This depends on how the device and user account are set up by your organisation.
Do not keep trying passwords indefinitely
If you have tried several passwords and are no longer sure which password is correct,
stop trying further.
