Setting up MFA in Microsoft 365
Step 1: Sign in
- Open a browser.
- Go to https://portal.office.com
- Sign in with your Microsoft 365 account. This consists of your email and the password you have received.
Step 2: More information required
After the first sign-in, the message appears:
"More information required" or "Additional security verification required".

Click Next.
Step 3: Install Microsoft Authenticator
- You will now receive a prompt to install Microsoft Authenticator. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator.
- Install the app.
- Open the app.
- Now click twice on Next in the window on your computer.
Step 4: Add account
- Choose Add account (+).
- Select Work or school account.
- Choose Scan QR code.
Step 5: Scan QR code
- A QR code will appear on your computer.
- Scan this with the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Then click Next.
Step 6: Approve test notification
- Microsoft sends a test notification to the app.
- Open the notification on your phone.
- The notification shows a number; enter this on your phone and click Yes.
Step 7: Configuration complete
- After successful verification, a confirmation will appear.
- Click Next and on the last page click Done.
Step 8: Future sign-ins
For future sign-ins:
- Enter your username and password.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Approve the sign-in or enter the displayed number.
Tips
If you lose your phone, contact the IT department to re-register MFA.
